The Hungarian open-source geospatial community is thriving. This year’s FOSS4G:HU returned to its traditional home at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), welcoming around 120 attendees - a major jump from last year.

Here are the highlights from our time in Budapest.

Overcoming field data challenges

Our own Patrik Mizera took the stage to present: “Overcoming Data Collection Challenges with QGIS and Mergin Maps.” He dove into the common friction points of field data collection - like spotty connectivity and complex office syncing - and demonstrated how the integration of QGIS and Mergin Maps provides a seamless, offline-ready, open-source solution for teams worldwide.

When OSM meets art

A standout session came from Szabó Balázs on the intersection of OpenStreetMap, interior design, and art. His startup breathes new life into traditional cartography by creating laser-engraved wooden wall maps and map-themed carpets using OSM and QGIS. Beautifully, this project channels financial support back to open-source ecosystems from a completely new, non-digital customer base.

GeoBeer

We wrapped up a great day of networking at the traditional GeoBeer, the perfect informal finish to an inspiring event.

As proud members of the OSGeo, we want to extend a huge tribute to the local FOSS4G:HU organizing team. Pulling off a growing event at such a brilliant venue takes immense dedication, and we love supporting the local teams who keep these regional chapters vibrant.

Köszönjük, Budapest - see you next year!
