We are launching a new crowdfunding campaign to advance the 3D capabilities of QGIS, with a focus on enabling open-source digital twin workflows for urban planning, infrastructure, and environmental applications. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to the QGIS community and our mission to make open-source geospatial tools more powerful and accessible.
The campaign aims to raise €75,000 by June 30, 2025, with improvements scheduled for delivery in QGIS 4.0 (October 2025) and QGIS 4.2 (February 2026). Key objectives include: performance enhancements through instanced rendering, data-defined 3D symbol properties (position, rotation, size), export support for glTF, and improved compatibility with open formats such as CityGML, IFC, and ESRI Scene Layers (I3S). Contributions start from €200, and all sponsors will be acknowledged in the QGIS changelog.
This initiative follows successful past campaigns that brought 3D Tiles and point cloud support to QGIS, continuing our effort to make it a fully capable, open-source geospatial platform for both 2D and 3D data.
